The comedian and content creator says his personal journey changed the way he hears Wizkid’s softer sound.
Layi Wasabi has never been shy about his Wizkid fandom — but in a recent candid reflection, the comedian revealed that his loyalty was tested when the Afrobeats superstar shifted his musical tone.
Speaking openly about his history as a fan, Layi said he has supported Wizkid since the early days of his career, and wasn’t afraid to go to bat for him. “I had a lot of arguments in school because of Wizkid and Davido,” he recalled.
But as Wizkid moved away from high-energy anthems toward more mellow, introspective music, Layi found himself frustrated. At that point in his life, he wanted music that mirrored his own reality — hustle, grind, and ambition.
“When he started making soft music, I kept complaining that I need to hear the struggle,” he said.
The shift in Layi’s perspective didn’t come from a change in Wizkid — it came from a change in himself. As his own circumstances improved, so did his appreciation for the music he once dismissed.
“I started to enjoy Wizkid’s music again when life got better for me,” he said.
It’s a sentiment many fans will quietly relate to — the idea that the music we connect with often says less about the artist and more about where we are in our own lives. What sounds like comfort to one listener can feel like complacency to another, until life catches up and reframes everything
