Uganda’s President Museveni Sworn in for Another Five-Year Term

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni was on Tuesday sworn in for another five-year term in office, extending his decades-long rule over the East African nation.

The 81-year-old leader took the oath of office during a ceremony attended by thousands of supporters at Kololo ceremonial grounds in Kampala.

Museveni also received the ceremonial instruments of power as military parades and aerial displays marked his eighth inauguration since assuming power.

Ahead of the ceremony, Uganda’s army chief, Muhoozi Kainerugaba — who is also Museveni’s son and widely viewed as his possible successor — supervised rehearsals for the military parade. Russian-made Sukhoi fighter jets flew over the capital as part of the display.

Museveni has remained one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders, having first taken power in 1986.

While many Ugandans increasingly believe the veteran leader’s presidency may be entering its final phase, questions remain over the country’s political transition and the future of leadership after his tenure.

Observers say attention is gradually shifting toward how power may eventually change hands and whether the transition process will be peaceful and orderly.
