President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to preserving Nigeria’s unity, saying the patriotism and discipline exemplified by the country’s first military head of state, Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, remain foundational to nation building.
Represented by Minister of Defence Christopher Musa at the 60th memorial celebration of the late general in Umuahia, Tinubu said government remains resolute in strengthening the institutions that safeguard Nigeria’s democracy and security, and appealed to Abia State Governor Alex Otti to construct a Unity Square honoring both Aguiyi-Ironsi and his host, Adekunle Fajuyi, who died with him during the 1966 counter coup. Tinubu commended Otti’s style of governance as a standard for others to follow.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo said Nigeria must learn from the darker moments of its history to strengthen national unity, while Otti said he agreed with Aguiyi-Ironsi’s vision of a united country, arguing Nigeria is stronger connected than divided. Former First Lady Patience Jonathan said the memorial honored a hero who died standing for Nigeria’s unity, while former Chief of Army Staff Azubuike Ihejirika described Ironsi as a patriotic Nigerian whose belief in unity deserves recognition. Family member John Aguiyi-Ironsi said the gathering was meant to honor rather than mourn the late leader, while his daughter Louisa Aguiyi-Ironsi, at an earlier wreath laying ceremony, said the occasion represented honor for a life devoted to national service.
