Taraba Police Confirm 10 Bodies After Community Attack; Katsina Reports 14 Suspected Bandits Killed

The Taraba State Police Command says 10 bodies were recovered following an attack on Binnari community in Karim Lamido Local Government Area, although residents fear the death toll may be considerably higher.

Local accounts put the number of people killed at about 30 and described burnt homes, destroyed food supplies and residents fleeing the area. Those higher casualty estimates had not been independently confirmed. Police spokesperson ASP Victor Mshelizah said preliminary information suggested the attackers initially sought food and valuables, adding that their identities were not yet established.

The attack reportedly occurred shortly after Friday prayers. Residents called for stronger protection and further searches for missing people.

In a separate development, the Katsina State Government said community hunters disrupted an alleged kidnapping operation around Gidan Wawo in Bakori Local Government Area, killing 14 suspected bandits and rescuing three people.

Internal Security Commissioner Nasir Danmusa said intelligence indicated that armed men on motorcycles had been moving towards the area. The government reported that a hunter, 29-year-old Mohammed Ibrahim Jidda, was killed, another hunter was injured, and a traveller, Jamilu Lawal, died when a vehicle was burnt.

Katsina authorities warned of possible reprisals and said countermeasures had been activated. Both incidents underscore the persistent threats facing rural communities, while the differing casualty accounts in Taraba require continued verification.
