The Presidency has announced that President Bola Tinubu will travel from Abuja to Makkah, Saudi Arabia, to perform Umrah and pray for Nigeria’s peace, unity and progress. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said the visit would provide time for worship and reflection, with the President expected to return the following week.
Before his departure, Tinubu was scheduled to commission equipment acquired by the Nigerian Air Force at the presidential wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. The Presidency presented the journey primarily as a religious engagement.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, however, called for greater disclosure of the President’s movements and activities during the trip. Through a statement issued by Phrank Shaibu, a communications official in his political organization, Atiku demanded current photographs and videos of the pilgrimage and an account of the travel arrangements and funding.
Atiku further alleged that the President might proceed to France after a brief stay in Makkah and raised other questions about his health and a purported financing arrangement. The material supplied offered no independent substantiation for those allegations. The dispute highlights competing demands for presidential privacy, public accountability and transparency in official travel.
