The Senate has paid tribute to former Delta State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, highlighting his contribution to peace-building in the Niger Delta, healthcare delivery, regional integration and infrastructure development.
The tributes followed a motion sponsored by Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas and co-sponsored by other lawmakers after Uduaghan’s death on October 19 at the age of 71.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio recalled Uduaghan’s involvement in the BRACED Commission and in regional efforts that supported the Niger Delta amnesty process during the administration of President Umaru Yar’Adua.
Lawmakers also cited Uduaghan’s investments in maternal and child healthcare, Delta State University Teaching Hospital, education, roads, transport and Asaba International Airport.
His Delta Beyond Oil agenda was remembered as an attempt to diversify the state’s economy away from excessive dependence on petroleum revenue.
Senator Adams Oshiomhole described the former governor as a bridge-builder whose contribution to regional cooperation went beyond ethnic identity, while other senators praised his compassion and public service record.
The Senate observed a minute’s silence and extended condolences to Uduaghan’s family and the people of Delta State.
Uduaghan served as Delta State Commissioner for Health, Secretary to the State Government and governor from 2007 to 2015.
