Northern Christian Leaders Reject Trump’s Claim of Ending Killings in Nigeria

The Christian Association of Nigeria in the 19 northern states and the FCT, alongside a synod of bishops and senior clergy, has rejected US President Donald Trump’s claim that American military action had ended the killing of Christians in Nigeria.

The leaders called the statement misleading and inconsistent with the security realities on the ground, insisting that killings, abductions and violent attacks were still occurring across several states. Trump had claimed at a Washington event that US action largely ended attacks by eliminating top commanders and deterring further violence.

Northern CAN Chairman Joseph Hayab said only Nigerians, particularly victims of insecurity, could judge whether the situation had improved, arguing that the President’s remarks were based on inaccurate information while innocent Nigerians of all faiths continued to face attacks.

He urged the United States to provide genuine assistance rather than what he called propaganda, saying people were still being held captive and communities still attacked. Ecumenical synod official Archbishop Osazee William said there was no convincing evidence the reported intervention had achieved the results claimed, and expressed concern over reports of behind-the-scenes negotiations. The Christian leaders called on both the Nigerian government and the international community to intensify efforts to address insecurity and protect lives and property nationwide
