The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed that 204 people have died from Lassa fever and 793 confirmed cases have been recorded in the country between January and the end of Week 19 of 2026, with the case fatality rate at 25.7 percent, higher than the 19.4 percent recorded during the same period in 2025.
The Lassa Fever Situation Report for Week 19, covering May 4 to 10, 2026, showed that new confirmed cases declined from 22 in Week 18 to 17 in Week 19, with cases reported in Edo, Bauchi, Ondo, Kogi, Taraba, and Nasarawa states. One new healthcare worker was also affected during the week.
The NCDC said 23 states had recorded at least one confirmed case across 108 local government areas, but that 84 percent of all confirmed cases were concentrated in Bauchi, Ondo, Taraba, Benue, and Edo states. The predominant age group affected remained the 21 to 30 age bracket.
