Senate President Akpabio and Presidency Advance State Police Constitutional Template

Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio has disclosed that the presidency and the National Assembly are developing a constitutional framework for the establishment of state police, featuring a national state police commission that would regulate recruitment, promotion, training, and the operational conduct of state police formations across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Akpabio made the disclosure after leading principal officers of the Senate on a Sallah homage to President Bola Tinubu at his Ikoyi, Lagos residence. He said the framework would enable states to participate meaningfully in securing the lives and property of their citizens while maintaining national standards through central regulatory oversight.

He said the country’s security situation had improved significantly under the current administration, noting that no part of Nigeria was under the control of any insurgent group and that organized bomb attacks had been effectively ended. He acknowledged, however, that attacks on soft targets such as schools, churches, and mosques represented an evolving challenge requiring additional collaborative effort.

On police funding, Akpabio said the legislature was considering raising the allocation to the Police Trust Fund from 0.5 percent to one percent of revenue from the federation’s production account.
