Former Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko has called for greater devolution of power, arguing that excessive concentration of authority at the federal level has contributed to Nigeria’s governance problems.
Mimiko spoke during an event at the annual convention of the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
Drawing from the biblical account of Jethro advising Moses to delegate responsibilities, he said governance worked more effectively when authority and resources were placed closer to the people.
The former governor argued that local and state leaders should be empowered to address community-level problems while the Federal Government concentrated on national responsibilities.
He said a highly centralized structure was unsuitable for a country with Nigeria’s ethnic, cultural and religious diversity.
Mimiko acknowledged current efforts to decentralize policing, resource management and decision-making but said broader structural reforms remained necessary.
He linked centralization to insecurity, corruption, poverty, poor leadership and ethnic tension.
According to him, true federalism required competent subnational governments with the authority and resources to solve local problems.
PSC Appoints New Police Academy Commandant, Deploys Eight Commissioners
The Police Service Commission has appointed Assistant Inspector General Auwal Musa Mohammed as Commandant of the Nigeria Police Academy in Wudil, Kano State.
The commission also approved the deployment of eight Commissioners of Police to state commands.
Auwal Mohammed has more than 33 years of policing experience in operations, investigations, intelligence-led policing and training.
He holds degrees in political science and public policy from Bayero University.
His previous assignments include Commandant of the Police College in Maiduguri, Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State and Assistant Inspector General for Zones Three and Six.
The commissioners deployed are Afolabi Olutokunbo to Abia, Ayodeji Faniyan to Plateau, Saka Ajao to Bayelsa, Ajo Ordue to Cross River, Nnanna Ama to Anambra, Patrick Daaor to Edo, Tijani Murtala to Jigawa and Samuel Etaifo to Delta.
The commission said the postings followed recent promotions and operational requirements.
Board member and retired Supreme Court Justice Paul Galumje urged the officers to act professionally, remain impartial, uphold the rule of law and discharge their duties with integrity.
