Gov Otti Celebrates Obi of Onitsha at 85, Describes Monarch as Symbol of Wisdom and Excellence

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has paid glowing tribute to the Obi of Onitsha, Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, during activities marking the monarch’s 85th birthday celebration in Umuahia.

The event, held at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, brought together political leaders, traditional rulers, religious figures, and dignitaries from across Nigeria to honour the revered monarch, popularly known as Agbogidi.

Speaking at the celebration, Governor Otti described the Obi of Onitsha as a man of grace, wisdom, selflessness, and excellence whose life and achievements continue to inspire generations.

The governor highlighted the monarch’s distinguished educational and professional background, noting that he studied at Stanford University and Columbia University before establishing himself as a respected business leader and captain of industry in Nigeria.

Otti also reflected on his personal relationship with the monarch, revealing that he first met him years ago in Ikoyi and has since regarded him as a father figure.

According to the governor, the monarch’s endorsement played a significant role in his political journey and eventual emergence as governor.

He noted that hosting the celebration in Umuahia despite the monarch being from Onitsha symbolised the unity and shared identity of the people of the Southeast.

“This is the Abia we are building — united, dignified, inclusive, and forward-looking,” Otti stated, adding that the commercial city of Aba also reflects the cosmopolitan spirit that accommodates people from different parts of Nigeria.

The governor described the monarch’s life as proof that hard work, diligence, integrity, and enduring values attract honour and respect.

He urged young Nigerians to emulate such virtues in order to build lasting legacies.

The event was attended by several notable personalities, including Pastor Chinedu Ezekwesili, former Minister of Education Oby Ezekwesili, traditional rulers from Onitsha and other parts of the country, as well as religious leaders.

Governor Otti prayed for continued wisdom, good health, and longevity for the Obi of Onitsha, whom he described as a respected figure not only in Nigeria but across Africa and the world.
