FOSAD Urges Suspension of 2026 AMVCA Over Xenophobic Attacks on Nigerians in South Africa

The Forum of South-East Academic Doctors (FOSAD) has called on MultiChoice to suspend the 2026 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), scheduled for May 9 at Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos, in response to recent xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

In a statement signed by its President, Dr. Stephen Nwala, and Secretary-General, Dr. Uzor Ngoladi, the group described the ongoing violence against Nigerians as “inhumane, barbaric, and a gross violation of human dignity and African solidarity.”

FOSAD expressed outrage over reports and viral videos showing Nigerians allegedly subjected to brutal attacks, including one widely circulated footage in which two Nigerian women were beaten and stripped, an incident the group condemned as “a disgrace to humanity.”

The Forum also raised concerns about what it described as systemic discrimination against Nigerians in South Africa, including restricted access to essential services such as healthcare and education. It warned that the situation reflects a worsening trend that requires urgent intervention from African and international bodies.

Against this backdrop, FOSAD argued that proceeding with a high-profile entertainment event such as the AMVCA would be inappropriate and insensitive.

“Going ahead with the AMVCA under these circumstances would amount to a slap in the face of victims and their families,” the statement said. “It would signal indifference to the suffering of Nigerians in South Africa.”

The group further referenced historical ties between Nigeria and South Africa, noting Nigeria’s role in supporting the anti-apartheid struggle, including international advocacy efforts that contributed to the release of Nelson Mandela. It described the current situation as a “betrayal of shared history and solidarity.”

“It is deeply painful that a country Nigeria once stood firmly behind during its darkest days now witnesses the humiliation and killing of Nigerians on its soil,” FOSAD added.

The Forum also warned that continued inaction could heighten tensions within Nigeria and potentially trigger public backlash if the situation persists.

It therefore urged MultiChoice, owners of DStv and GOtv, to demonstrate corporate responsibility by suspending the 12th edition of the AMVCA as a mark of respect for victims and as a gesture of solidarity.

“This is not merely about entertainment; it is about humanity, dignity, and justice,” the group stated.

FOSAD also called on the Nigerian government and diplomatic authorities to intensify efforts to protect citizens abroad and ensure accountability for perpetrators of xenophobic violence under international law.
