The Federal Government is preparing to launch a major electric mobility programme in the North East, with 10,000 electric vehicles and tricycles expected to be deployed across the region.
Regional Development Minister Abubakar Momoh disclosed the plan after inspecting an assembly facility in Maiduguri managed by the North East Development Commission.
The project is expected to be inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu.
Momoh said most of the targeted vehicles had already arrived at the facility and assembly work was under way.
The fleet will include buses, taxis and tricycles and will be distributed across Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe.
Charging infrastructure will form part of the programme.
The minister said the assembly process could generate substantial employment, with projections of up to 100,000 job opportunities before all the vehicles are completed.
Some electric tricycles are being designed to carry both passengers and agricultural produce.
Momoh said the programme should therefore be linked with rural road projects so farmers can transport goods more easily from communities to urban markets.
The NEDC originally announced the plan in 2024 as part of efforts to modernise transport and reduce emissions.
The programme is expected to be implemented in phases, supported by charging points and solar power installations along major routes.
The minister also inspected rural road projects and the ongoing construction of the NEDC headquarters in Maiduguri.
He said combining improved roads with affordable transport could create stronger economic links between rural producers and cities.
