COAS Commissions 80 Affordable Housing Units in Jos, Reserves Homes for Wounded Soldiers

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has commissioned 80 housing units under the Nigerian Army Affordable Home Ownership Scheme in Jos, Plateau State, reaffirming the Army’s commitment to improving the welfare of its personnel through its Soldier-First initiative.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Tuesday, General Shaibu said providing quality and affordable housing for soldiers is a strategic investment aimed at boosting morale, operational effectiveness and combat readiness.

He stressed that the welfare of personnel and their families remains a key pillar of his leadership philosophy, noting that well-motivated and professionally fulfilled soldiers are better equipped to carry out the constitutional responsibilities of the Nigerian Army.

According to the Army Chief, the newly commissioned 80 housing units in Jos build on previous efforts to improve accommodation for personnel. He disclosed that 60 housing units were delivered last year, while an additional 120 units in Abuja and 40 units in Benin are scheduled for commissioning in the coming months.

General Shaibu also announced that five per cent of the housing units have been reserved for soldiers wounded in the line of duty, describing the initiative as a demonstration of the Army’s appreciation for personnel who have made significant sacrifices in defending the country.

He said the allocation recognises the courage and dedication of wounded soldiers and reflects the Nigerian Army’s commitment to supporting those who have paid a heavy price in service to the nation.

The COAS urged beneficiaries to take good care of the facilities, describing home ownership as a symbol of stability, responsibility and a lasting reward for dedicated service.

Earlier, the Managing Director of Post-Service Housing Development Limited, Major General Isaiah Alison, commended the Army Chief for prioritising the welfare of personnel and disclosed that more housing projects are underway to benefit soldiers across the country.

As part of his visit to Jos, Lieutenant General Shaibu also commissioned newly completed trainee hostels and convenience facilities at the 3 Division Training School.

The Army said the projects reflect its broader commitment to strengthening personnel welfare, enhancing training infrastructure and improving institutional capacity in support of national security and operational readiness.
