Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has placed Nigeria’s electoral establishment on formal and public notice over what he characterised as a growing, documented, and deeply alarming threat of vote manipulation at collation centres, warning with considerable urgency that without the rapid development and implementation of effective countermeasures, the integrity and credibility of the 2027 general election were already being undermined before the campaign season had formally begun.
Atiku raised the alarm in detail during a structured meeting with members of the Coalition for Democracy Movement, a political support and electoral integrity organisation led by Dr. Jibril Shehu Mustapha, in which the group presented a comprehensive outline of its nationwide organisational structure and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting his political aspirations and, more broadly, to defending the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral processes against interference and manipulation.
Posting a detailed account of the meeting on his verified X account, Atiku confirmed that discussions had focused with particular intensity on the specific vulnerability of the vote collation stage of the electoral process as a point at which election results were historically susceptible to manipulation, alteration, and fraud, describing this as an issue that demanded immediate, serious, and coordinated attention from all stakeholders committed to democratic governance in Nigeria.
He expressed deep appreciation for the coalition’s consistent and sustained support over an extended period, acknowledged the personal sacrifices that many members had made in their commitment to democratic principles, and assured them that their contributions to the broader struggle for electoral integrity would be acknowledged and honoured by history regardless of the immediate political outcomes.
“I highlighted growing concerns about election manipulation, especially at collation centres, and stressed the need for effective countermeasures, while expressing gratitude for their support and commending their consistency. I assured them that their sacrifices will not be forgotten, and that history will remember their role in defending democracy,” he said.
The former vice president’s warning came against a backdrop of heightened anxiety across Nigeria’s political landscape about the fairness and transparency of the 2027 electoral process, with multiple opposition figures and civil society organisations raising concerns about the institutional and political conditions under which the elections would be conducted.
