Arewa Forum Demands Stronger Security Response Ahead of 2027 Elections

The northern sociocultural group says killings, abductions and attacks on communities must take priority over political mobilization.

The Arewa Consultative Forum has accused political leaders of paying insufficient attention to insecurity while preparations intensify for the 2027 general election, warning that persistent attacks are undermining livelihoods and confidence in government.

In a statement issued by National Publicity Secretary Tanimu Muhammad Baba, the forum expressed concern over killings, kidnappings, displacement and raids by armed groups across northern Nigeria and other parts of the country.

ACF said the scale of the threat was particularly troubling in communities where residents face repeated attacks and prolonged captivity. It referred to children and other citizens reportedly held by kidnappers in several states and urged authorities to intensify rescue operations.

The organization singled out Zamfara, alleging that five separate incidents had occurred in the state on one day, with deaths, abductions and looting reported. It also cited security concerns in Plateau, Taraba, Benue, Niger, Katsina and Kogi.

Around Kaduna, the forum drew attention to kidnapping and ransom demands affecting Chikun Local Government Area and nearby communities. The examples, it said, represented only part of a wider national crisis.

ACF argued that public officials appeared increasingly preoccupied with electioneering while citizens continued to live under threat. It called for urgent and sustained action to protect communities, recover captives and restore the conditions needed for economic and social activity.

The figures and individual incidents in the statement are allegations attributed to the forum and were not independently verified in the material supplied for this report.
