Senate President Godswill Akpabio has assured Nigerians that political campaigns ahead of the 2027 general election will not prevent the National Assembly from carrying out its legislative responsibilities.
Akpabio said lawmakers were elected for four year terms and remained obligated to work throughout that period.
He spoke with journalists at the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo after attending a meeting of All Progressives Congress stakeholders in Akwa Ibom North West.
At the meeting, President Bola Tinubu, Akpabio and Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno received endorsements for their respective 2027 bids.
Akpabio said legislative duties and political campaigning could be managed separately.
He suggested that lawmakers could hold campaign activities in the afternoon or evening after parliamentary work.
The Senate President also noted that members of the National Assembly belonged to different political parties and would not necessarily be campaigning at the same time.
He said that would reduce the risk of simultaneous absences disrupting parliamentary business.
Akpabio maintained that the legislature would continue considering bills and other matters affecting Nigerians during the election season.
His assurance comes as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 election and lawmakers increasingly take part in party consultations, endorsements and campaign planning.
The National Assembly traditionally faces pressure during election cycles because many members seek reelection or participate in party campaigns.
Akpabio said the institution would nevertheless maintain its legislative calendar.
He argued that political officeholders had to balance both responsibilities because electioneering did not suspend their constitutional mandate.
The practical test will be whether attendance, committee work and plenary sessions remain consistent as campaigns intensify.
