Canadian rapper Drake has won more than $1 million after Canada defeated South Africa 1-0 in their FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash.
The Grammy-winning artist reportedly staked $770,000 on Canada to qualify for the Round of 16, with the successful wager yielding a payout of $1,001,000.
Before the match, Drake shared a screenshot of his bet on Instagram, revealing that he had backed the Canadian national team to progress. He said the wager was inspired by a friendly exchange with South African DJ Black Coffee.
“@realblackcoffee was chirping in the DM. I had to raise the STAKES,” Drake wrote.
Canada secured the dramatic victory in stoppage time when Stephen Eustáquio scored the decisive goal at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, sending the tournament co-hosts into the Round of 16 for the first time in FIFA World Cup history.
The defeat brought an end to South Africa’s impressive campaign. Bafana Bafana had reached the knockout stage of the expanded tournament for the first time after finishing second in their group and qualifying ahead of Nigeria.
Under coach Hugo Broos, South Africa exceeded expectations during the group stage, including a crucial 1-0 victory over South Korea that secured their place in the last 32.
Drake has built a reputation for placing high-value bets on major sporting events, with his latest successful wager adding more than $1 million to his winnings after Canada’s historic World Cup victory over South Africa.
