Netflix has announced plans to release its upcoming fantasy film Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew in cinemas worldwide ahead of its debut on the streaming platform, marking a significant shift in the company’s distribution strategy.
According to a statement from the streaming giant, the film will premiere in theaters on February 12, 2027, before becoming available for home viewing on April 2 nearly two months later. The move represents the first time Netflix will implement such a wide theatrical window before a streaming release.
The film is based on The Magician’s Nephew, the 1955 novel by C.S. Lewis, and serves as part of the broader “Chronicles of Narnia” series.
Directed by Greta Gerwig, known for her work on major productions such as Barbie and Little Women—the project is expected to draw significant global attention.
Gerwig welcomed the release strategy, describing the collaboration with Netflix as “extraordinary” and expressing excitement about audiences experiencing the film both in cinemas and at home.
The cast features rising talents alongside established stars, including Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Daniel Craig, and Meryl Streep.
Netflix has previously experimented with theatrical releases, though typically on a limited scale or after streaming debuts. The company’s evolving approach comes amid broader industry discussions around cinema windows and streaming competition, particularly as traditional studios maintain exclusive theatrical runs before digital distribution.
The decision also follows comments from Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos, who has indicated openness to adopting more conventional theatrical release models, including the industry-standard 45-day window.
Industry observers say the move could signal a new phase in Netflix’s strategy as it seeks to balance its streaming-first model with growing interest in big-screen releases.
