Gap Co-Founder Doris Fisher Dies at 94

Doris Fisher, co-founder of global clothing retailer Gap Inc., has died at the age of 94, the company announced on Monday.

In a statement, Gap said Fisher passed away “peacefully, surrounded by her family,” though no cause or exact date of death was disclosed.

Paying tribute, Gap President and CEO Richard Dickson described Fisher as a “true original,” crediting her with shaping the company’s culture and philosophy from its earliest days.

“There is simply no equal to Doris Fisher. In Gap-speak, she was a true original,” Dickson said. “She understood first-hand the value of self-expression, diversity, and inclusion. And she worked tirelessly to ensure that Gap Inc. always did more than sell clothes.”

Fisher and her late husband, Donald Fisher, opened the first Gap store in San Francisco, California, USA in 1969. The business quickly became a defining force in American casual fashion, popularising affordable, ready-to-wear clothing such as jeans, T-shirts, and sweatshirts.

According to reports, the brand name “Gap” was inspired by the “generation gap,” reflecting the company’s early focus on younger customers.

The Fishers also helped reshape retail practices by prioritising simple store layouts, well-organised sizing, and consistent stock availability—an approach widely credited with improving the shopping experience.

Under their leadership, Gap expanded into a global retail powerhouse, later acquiring brands such as Banana Republic and Old Navy. Today, the company operates approximately 3,500 stores worldwide, including franchised locations.

Dickson praised Fisher’s enduring influence on the company’s identity, noting that much of Gap’s corporate culture “at its best derives from Doris’s influence.”

“Never content with what is, Doris continuously imagined what might be and then made it happen,” he said.

Fisher is survived by her three sons, Robert, William, and John.
