The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, has said President Bola Tinubu is committed to repositioning the Nigeria Police Force through enhanced education and training initiatives.
Alausa made this known on Monday in Abuja during a courtesy visit by the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, alongside senior police officers.
He said the meeting focused on plans to establish a southern campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria, in line with the administration’s broader agenda to strengthen professionalism and improve security delivery nationwide.
“This meeting is in continuation of President Bola Tinubu’s agenda to reposition the police to deliver on its core mandate and improve security across the country,” Alausa said.
According to the minister, the proposed campus located in Erije, could admit its first set of students between September and November 2026, pending expedited resource verification by the National Universities Commission (NUC). He directed the commission to fast-track the process to ensure academic activities commence as scheduled.
Alausa also disclosed plans to convert more than 42 police colleges across the country into monotechnics, aimed at strengthening technical and professional training within the Force. He noted that a presidential waiver had been secured to facilitate the transition.
He added that discussions included accrediting five to six of the proposed monotechnics to offer industry-relevant courses designed to enhance operational capacity within the police.
To drive implementation, the minister said three committees had been set up. These include a Resource Verification Committee chaired by the NUC Executive Secretary; a capacity improvement committee for police colleges chaired by a Deputy Inspector-General of Police in collaboration with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE); and a third committee on infrastructure development for the southern campus, to be led by the Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) alongside senior police officials.
The Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Ahmed, commended the initiative and pledged the ministry’s support for its successful implementation.
Earlier, Disu emphasised the importance of education in addressing challenges across sectors, including policing, noting that improved training remains key to enhancing the effectiveness of the Force.
