Man Utd Defeat Liverpool, Clinch Champions League Spot

Manchester United secured qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League with a dramatic 3-2 victory over arch-rivals Liverpool FC at Old Trafford on Sunday.

A late strike from Kobbie Mainoo proved decisive in a pulsating encounter that saw United surrender a two-goal lead before rallying to claim all three points.

The hosts made a blistering start, racing into a 2-0 lead inside the opening 15 minutes. Matheus Cunha opened the scoring with a long-range effort that deflected past Liverpool goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, before Benjamin Sesko doubled the advantage shortly after, bundling home from close range following a well-worked move involving Bruno Fernandes.

Despite United’s early dominance, Liverpool responded strongly after the break. Dominik Szoboszlai reduced the deficit with a solo effort after capitalising on a loose pass, and the Hungarian midfielder later turned provider, setting up Cody Gakpo for a simple finish to level the score.

With both sides pushing for a winner, it was Mainoo who delivered the decisive moment, reacting quickest to a defensive error to fire home from the edge of the box and restore United’s lead.

The victory ensures United, currently third in the table, will finish in the top five and return to Europe’s elite club competition after a two-year absence.

Manager Michael Carrick, who has overseen a resurgence since taking charge earlier in the year, saw his side display both attacking flair and resilience, further strengthening his case to remain in the role long-term.

For Liverpool, the defeat marks their 11th league loss of the season, though they remain in contention for a Champions League spot and are likely to secure qualification with positive results in their remaining fixtures.

The result also completes United’s first league double over Liverpool since the 2015–16 season, underlining a significant shift in momentum between the two historic rivals.
