Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike has urged Nigerians to examine former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s role in the federal government’s privatization programme before assessing his latest presidential ambitions.
Speaking at a political gathering in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State, Wike said Atiku’s years as vice president between 1999 and 2007 should be central to public scrutiny of his record.
The minister argued that Atiku wielded significant influence during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, including in the privatization of state-owned enterprises.
Wike questioned the benefits of the programme and called on Atiku to explain the economic outcomes of decisions taken during that period.
He also referred to past criticism of Atiku attributed to Obasanjo, suggesting that the former president’s assessment of their working relationship should form part of public debate.
Wike went on to question the African Democratic Congress’s ability to present a coherent alternative ahead of the 2027 election, citing internal political competition.
The minister’s comments constitute political criticism. The report does not establish wrongdoing by Atiku, and any evaluation of the privatisation programme would require documentary evidence, historical policy records and responses from those involved.
