The FCT minister says the politician resisted pressure to withdraw support during a difficult campaign and never demanded contracts in return.
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike has paid tribute to the late Peoples Democratic Party figure Daniel Orbih, describing him as a decisive ally in his emergence as Rivers State governor in 2015.
At a memorial event in Abuja, Wike said Orbih stood by his candidacy despite pressure and inducements from political opponents. He credited the former South South vice chairman of the PDP with helping to mobilize political support during a contested period.
The minister recalled that Orbih provided two protected Mercedes Benz buses for campaign security and refused, throughout Wike’s eight years as governor, to seek government contracts as a reward for their political relationship.
Wike said Orbih’s loyalty was most evident during political crises, when relationships were under strain. He pledged to maintain ties with the family and called for the late politician to receive a state burial in Edo in recognition of his public life.
Former Edo governor and serving senator Adams Oshiomhole also reflected on their years of political rivalry. He said Orbih’s scrutiny as an opposition leader had forced him to think more carefully about decisions taken while in office.
Magnus Abe recalled working with Orbih on an earlier governorship campaign, describing him as a political bridge builder. Other speakers praised his family life, public service and role in Edo politics.
Orbih died on August 31 at the age of 64, according to the account of the memorial. The tributes focused on his influence across party lines and on political relationships that continued despite differences in affiliation.
