Waidi Shaibu Tasks Commanders on Accountability, Combat Readiness

The Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, has charged commanders across the Nigerian Army to strengthen operational effectiveness through accountability, professionalism and results-oriented leadership.

Speaking at the closing of the Chief of Army Staff Bi-Annual Conference 2026 held at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre and Suites in Asokoro, Abuja, the Army Chief said the gathering provided an opportunity to assess ongoing operations and develop strategies to address the country’s evolving security challenges.

According to Shaibu, discussions during the conference focused on improving operational responses, enhancing training systems and adapting to the changing nature of modern security threats.

He stated that the conference outcomes were aimed at building a more agile, technologically advanced and combat-ready force capable of effectively carrying out its responsibilities.

The Army Chief highlighted ongoing efforts to improve the operational capabilities of the military, including the acquisition of additional tactical drones and the reconfiguration of Army aviation assets for combat operations.

He noted that the upgrades had enhanced intelligence gathering, precision targeting, troop mobility and casualty evacuation during operations.

Shaibu also pointed to progress in recruitment, advanced military training, professional education and leadership development within the Army.

He stressed the importance of discipline, competence and merit-based leadership in maintaining institutional integrity and improving operational performance.

Reaffirming his “soldier-first” philosophy, the COAS said troop welfare remained critical to mission success and directed commanders to prioritise the wellbeing of personnel and their families.

He called for prompt payment of entitlements, improved healthcare services, educational support and better welfare packages for troops.

The Army Chief urged participants to ensure that resolutions reached during the conference translate into practical and measurable operational results on the field.

Shaibu also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support and strategic guidance to the military.

He further commended the Minister of Defence, the Minister of State for Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff, service chiefs and heads of security and intelligence agencies for their continued collaboration.

The conference also featured the presentation of commendation plaques to senior officers who completed their tours of duty, as well as the unveiling of the insignia for the Nigerian Army Heritage and Feature Centre.
