Nigeria’s Super Falcons delivered a commanding performance on Wednesday, defeating Egypt 6-2 to secure a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where they will face long-time rivals Cameroon.
The nine-time African champions took the lead in the 21st minute after Asisat Oshoala confidently converted a penalty awarded following a VAR review for handball.
Nigeria doubled their advantage in first-half stoppage time as Gift Monday finished off a well-executed short-corner routine involving Toni Payne and Rinsola Babajide. Egypt, however, pulled one back before halftime to make it 2-1.
The Super Falcons resumed the second half with renewed intensity and restored their two-goal cushion in the 57th minute when substitute Uchenna Kanu fired home a left-footed finish.
Nigeria’s dominance continued as two more penalties, both awarded after VAR reviews, extended the lead. Christy Ucheibe converted the first in the 80th minute, while captain Rasheedat Ajibade added another from the spot eight minutes later.
The emphatic victory was sealed deep into stoppage time when Gift Monday and Ajibade combined to set up Joy Omewa, who scored her maiden WAFCON goal to complete the 6-2 rout.
The convincing win sends the Super Falcons into the quarter-finals, where they will renew their historic rivalry with Cameroon in a highly anticipated last-eight encounter.
