President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately lift the freeze placed on the bank accounts of the Osun State Government.
The President gave the directive in a statement issued on Thursday, ordering the anti-graft agency to vacate the court order that led to the freezing of the state’s accounts.
According to the statement, Tinubu said that while he respects the operational independence of anti-corruption agencies, the timing of the EFCC’s action—coming just days before the August 15 Osun State governorship election—could erode public confidence in the credibility and fairness of the electoral process.
The President stressed the importance of ensuring that the forthcoming election is conducted in an atmosphere that inspires public trust and democratic integrity.
The directive comes amid controversy over the EFCC’s decision to freeze the state’s accounts as part of an investigation into the alleged mismanagement of public funds.
The Presidency did not indicate whether the ongoing investigation would be discontinued, but the President’s directive requires the immediate unfreezing of the accounts ahead of the governorship poll.
