Norway secured a historic place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for the first time after defeating five-time champions Brazil 2-1, with Erling Haaland scoring twice in a dramatic second-half display.

The Manchester City striker broke the deadlock in the 79th minute, powering home a header from Andreas Schjelderup’s cross before sealing victory 11 minutes later with a thunderous long-range strike.

Brazil pulled one back deep into stoppage time when Neymar converted a penalty, but the late goal proved to be no more than a consolation as the South Americans crashed out of the tournament.

Brazil had the chance to take the lead early in the contest after Kristoffer Ajer fouled Matheus Cunha inside the penalty area in the 13th minute. However, Bruno Guimarães failed to capitalise from the spot as Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland produced a fine save to keep the scores level.

Norway grew into the game after the interval following tactical changes by head coach Ståle Solbakken, who introduced Andreas Schjelderup and Oscar Bobb from the bench.

The substitutions proved decisive, with Schjelderup providing the assists for both of Haaland’s goals as Norway punished Brazil’s defensive lapses late in the game.

Haaland’s brace took his tally to seven goals at the tournament, drawing level with Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi in the race for the World Cup Golden Boot.

The result marks Brazil’s earliest World Cup elimination since 1990, while Norway advance to the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner of the Round of 16 clash between England and Mexico.
