Troops Report Gains against Armed Groups in Katsina, Borno and Sokoto

Nigerian military units say they recorded separate successes against armed groups in Katsina, Borno and Sokoto states during recent operations aimed at disrupting terrorist networks and protecting communities.

In Katsina, troops of Operation Fansan Yamma carried out a clearance operation in Matazu Local Government Area.

The Joint Task Force said its personnel encountered armed resistance while moving through identified terrorist enclaves.

The military said a terrorist commander was killed and weapons, ammunition and motorcycles were recovered.

Those battlefield claims were provided by the military and were not independently verified in the source material.

In Borno State, troops under Operation Hadin Kai said they repelled an attempted Boko Haram attack on Kukawa town.

According to the military, fighters attacked positions held by 101 Special Forces Battalion late on August 28.

Troops responded with direct and indirect fire and forced the attackers to withdraw toward the Cross Kauwa axis.

The military said several attackers were killed during the engagement, although no independent casualty verification was available in the supplied report.

A third operation took place around Ghandi town in Rabah Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

Operation Fansan Yamma said troops acted on intelligence about an armed group moving toward the community.

Soldiers deployed around Ghandi Bridge and engaged the group when contact was made.

The military said the attackers withdrew after being overpowered and weapons and ammunition were recovered.

The three operations form part of continuing military pressure on armed groups operating across the North-East and North-West.

Security agencies have increasingly combined ground operations, intelligence and air support to disrupt camps, protect communities and limit the movement of fighters.

The effectiveness of the campaign will ultimately depend on whether tactical gains can be sustained and translated into improved security for residents in affected areas.
