Tinubu Orders Investigation Into Killing of Katsina Cleric as Plateau Governor Condemns Gero Attack

President Bola Tinubu has condemned the killing of Islamic preacher Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka and his companion, Adamu Abubakar, in Katsina State, directing security agencies to intensify efforts to identify and arrest those responsible.

The two men were reportedly shot by unidentified attackers in Dutsin Ma on Monday, October 26, 2026. In a statement issued through presidential adviser Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu expressed sympathy to their families and the people of Katsina State, describing the attack as an assault on human life and peaceful coexistence.

The President instructed the police and other security agencies to support ongoing investigations and bring the perpetrators before the law.

The African Centre for Security, Governance and Development also called for an impartial and transparent investigation. It warned against speculation over the identity or motives of the attackers and urged residents and community leaders to avoid reprisals or the circulation of unverified claims.

In a separate security incident in Plateau State, Governor Caleb Mutfwang condemned an attack on Gero community in Jos South Local Government Area. Police authorities confirmed six deaths, revising an earlier figure of seven reported by community representatives.

Speaking during the swearing in of special advisers in Jos, Mutfwang said security agencies were pursuing leads left by the attackers. He urged communities to provide timely information to law enforcement officers, noting that delayed reports can hinder responses to emergencies.

Plateau police spokesperson Alfred Alabo said tactical teams, working with military personnel and Operation Rainbow, were deployed after armed men attacked the community. The police said the assailants fled towards surrounding forested hills.

Mutfwang also said a suspected leader linked to an earlier attack in Mangu Local Government Area had been arrested. That claim, like the circumstances of the Gero killings, remains subject to the outcome of investigations and any subsequent prosecution.

The incidents have renewed concerns about civilian protection, intelligence gathering and the speed of security responses. For both communities, the immediate priorities are credible investigations, support for bereaved families and measures to prevent further violence.
