South Africa Edge Bangladesh to Keep Women’s T20 World Cup Semi-final Hopes Alive

South Africa kept their Women’s T20 World Cup semi-final hopes alive with a hard-fought four-wicket victory over Bangladesh in their final Group A match at Lord’s on Sunday.

Chasing a modest target of 118, the Proteas endured a nervy batting display before sealing victory with four balls to spare, maintaining the pressure on India in the race for a place in the knockout stage.

The win means South Africa are on course to face unbeaten hosts England in the semi-finals, provided India fail to overcome Australia later on Sunday.

Despite securing the result, South Africa’s batting performance raised concerns after more convincing displays earlier in the tournament, including a victory over India and an impressive total of 208-1 against the Netherlands.

Captain Laura Wolvaardt was dismissed with the very first ball of the chase after being bowled by Marufa Aktar, while Dane van Niekerk departed for three, leaving South Africa at 59-3 halfway through the innings.

Annerie Dercksen steadied the innings with a crucial knock of 45 before edging behind in the 15th over, opening the door for Bangladesh to mount a late fightback.

The pressure intensified as Marizanne Kapp was run out for 16 and Nadine de Klerk was caught at deep midwicket with the Proteas still needing five runs.

However, Chloe Tryon held her nerve, striking a boundary before driving through the off-side to complete the chase and secure victory.

Earlier, South Africa’s bowlers produced another disciplined display after Marizanne Kapp dismissed Juairiya Ferdous with the opening delivery of the match.

Sobhana Mostary top-scored for Bangladesh with 42, while captain Nigar Sultana remained unbeaten on 32. However, the Tigers were restricted to 117-5 from their 20 overs, a total that ultimately proved insufficient despite their spirited bowling effort.

The victory keeps South Africa’s hopes of reaching the Women’s T20 World Cup semi-finals firmly in their own hands as attention turns to the outcome of India’s clash with Australia.
