Vice President Kashim Shettima has assured that Nigeria will uphold the principles of fairness, equity and justice in supporting candidates seeking to become the next Secretary-General of the United Nations.
Shettima made the remarks during a meeting in New York with Costa Rican diplomat Rebeca Grynspan, who is seeking international support for her candidacy for the top UN position.
The Vice President said Nigeria would support candidates who share Africa’s aspirations, particularly regarding reforms of global governance institutions and greater representation of developing countries in international decision-making bodies.
According to him, Nigeria’s position is guided by its commitment to multilateralism, peace and stronger cooperation among nations.
Shettima noted that Nigeria and Costa Rica share longstanding historical and diplomatic ties and pledged to present Grynspan’s candidacy for consideration based on Nigeria’s foreign policy interests and commitment to gender inclusion.
He reiterated Nigeria’s call for reforms to the global governance system, stressing that Africa’s population and growing global importance justify greater representation in institutions such as the United Nations Security Council.
Earlier, Grynspan said her candidacy would champion reforms sought by countries of the Global South and promised to prioritise peace, inclusion and stronger representation for Africa in global affairs.
