Shettima Inaugurates 400-Bed Borno Teaching Hospital as Zulum Expands Specialist Healthcare

Vice President Kashim Shettima has inaugurated the 400-bed Kashim Ibrahim University Teaching Hospital in Maiduguri, a major healthcare project that the Borno State Government says will improve specialist treatment and reduce the need for patients to travel outside the region for medical care.

Developed under Governor Babagana Zulum, the hospital combines clinical services with training facilities for doctors, nurses and other health professionals. Its diagnostic equipment includes a 1.5-tesla MRI scanner, a 160-slice CT scanner, conventional and mobile X-ray machines, 4D ultrasound systems, fluoroscopy and digital mammography.

The complex has 13 specialist departments and supporting facilities that include a medical college, student accommodation, a 200-unit staff estate and an oxygen plant. State officials expect it to serve patients from Borno, neighboring states and communities across the Lake Chad region.

At the inauguration, Shettima praised investments in public institutions, arguing that the lasting measure of leadership is the quality of services and infrastructure left behind. He said rebuilding Borno after years of insecurity must involve tangible improvements for patients and schoolchildren.

The Vice President also inaugurated the Yerwa Practice Mega Primary School and another mega primary school associated with the Kashim Shettima Free Education Programme, which supports access to education for orphans and vulnerable children.

The hospital’s long-term impact will depend on sustained staffing, maintenance, medical supplies and affordable access to the specialist services it has been designed to provide.
