Senate Advances Bill to Strengthen Senior Secondary School Funding and Oversight

The Senate has advanced proposed amendments to the National Senior Secondary Education Commission law, seeking to address inadequate school infrastructure, uneven educational standards and gaps in the delivery of public funding.

The amendment bill, sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, passed second reading and was referred for further legislative consideration. It proposes state and Federal Capital Territory education boards and expanded interventions for federal unity colleges and senior secondary schools operated by the Armed Forces.

Bamidele argued that stronger coordination was needed to improve classrooms, laboratories, instructional materials and access to quality education. He said implementation would require transparent allocation rules, financial accountability and measurable performance targets, not merely changes to legislation.

Several senators supported the proposal. Ahmad Lawan raised concerns about states that fail to access available education interventions because they have not met counterpart funding requirements. Adams Oshiomhole questioned the procedure for debating amendments without lawmakers having the existing legislation readily available for scrutiny.

The Senate nevertheless approved second reading by voice vote. The bill has not become law and must complete the remaining legislative stages.

In separate proceedings described in the supplied report, lawmakers called for intervention in erosion and flooding affecting a community identified as Bogoro, and received a committee report on an ambassadorial nomination. The location of the erosion incident should be checked before publication because the supplied description appears geographically inconsistent.
