Sanwo-Olu Backs Hamzat for 2027 Lagos Governorship Race

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

The endorsement was announced on Monday after a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, attended by key stakeholders, including members of the Governor’s Advisory Council.

Among those present were former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, and Ganiyu Solomon, alongside other party leaders.

Addressing journalists after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu said the decision followed extensive consultations and was unanimously supported by stakeholders.

According to him, Hamzat, who formally indicated interest in the governorship race, possesses the experience and competence required to lead the state.

“We just received the deputy governor, who came with a strong delegation of leaders to inform us of his intention to contest. It was unanimous among us that he is fit and well-prepared for the job,” the governor said.

Sanwo-Olu praised Hamzat’s performance over the past seven years, highlighting his integrity, loyalty, and commitment to governance, as well as his deep understanding of the workings of the state.

He also acknowledged the role of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in shaping their political journey and leadership partnership.

Describing Hamzat as fully prepared for higher responsibility, the governor said, “This is a deputy governor who has been ready for the role from day one. He has been built for the job, and we believe he deserves the opportunity to lead Lagos.”

The meeting, he added, was part of a broader consultative process involving party leaders and government officials, reflecting growing political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
