Russian Strike Kills One, Injures Nine in Kharkiv

A Russian aerial strike on Ukraine’s eastern city of Kharkiv has killed one person and injured nine others, local authorities confirmed on Saturday, as hostilities between Moscow and Kyiv continue to escalate.

Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov said the attack targeted a residential area in the city’s Kholodnogirsky district in the early hours of the day. According to him, a guided aerial bomb struck a building, trapping residents beneath the rubble.

“Sadly, during search and rescue operations, the body of a person who was killed was found under the rubble of the destroyed building,” Terekhov said in a post on Telegram.

Regional authorities reported that nine people were wounded in the strike, with five of the victims requiring hospital treatment. Oleg Synegubov, head of the Kharkiv regional military administration, described the situation as another instance of civilian areas coming under heavy attack.

Meanwhile, in southern Ukraine, officials in the Kherson region reported additional casualties from separate drone strikes. A 72-year-old woman was injured in the village of Zelenivka, while three others sustained wounds in attacks on Kherson’s Korabelny district.

The latest incidents come amid heightened aerial activity between both sides. Russia’s Ministry of Defence said its air defences intercepted 187 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones across various regions overnight.

The escalation follows a major Ukrainian drone offensive on Moscow two days earlier, which reportedly caused fires, struck a key oil refinery, and led to evacuations at the capital’s largest airport.

Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts led by the United States, talks aimed at ending the conflict — which began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 — remain stalled, with both sides continuing to intensify military operations.
