The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has given the federal government until August 10, 2026, to address outstanding welfare and labour issues or face a comprehensive nationwide strike, following a resolution at its July National Executive Council meeting in Gombe State.

In a communique signed by its leadership, the association demanded payment of outstanding salary arrears, allowances and full implementation of existing agreements, alongside establishment of a National Healthcare Workers Assault Prevention and Response Protocol and legislation criminalizing attacks on healthcare workers, describing persistent harassment of doctors as a serious threat to the healthcare system. It called for immediate payment of the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund to eligible doctors omitted from the initial disbursement, outstanding salary review arrears, and nineteen months of unpaid professional allowances, alongside conclusion of a pending ministerial committee review on excessive workload and abusive locum appointments, and finalization of a broader collective bargaining agreement for medical and health workers.
