The Kogi State Police Command says security operatives have rescued National Youth Service Corps members and other passengers abducted along the Aloma Egane Expressway in Ofu Local Government Area.
The attack occurred when armed men reportedly emerged from surrounding bushland, blocked two buses travelling in opposite directions and abducted passengers.
Some occupants escaped during the incident.
Police said the Divisional Police Officer in Ofu led a joint security team to the location after receiving a distress call.
Two abandoned vehicles were recovered at the scene.
They included a Peace Mass Transit bus and another passenger bus.
A coordinated search operation was launched in the surrounding forest.
Police said 11 abducted victims, including the drivers of the two vehicles, were initially rescued.
Preliminary debriefing indicated that many of the victims were NYSC members traveling from Bayelsa State to Abuja.
The command said the rescued passengers were allowed to continue their journey after necessary procedures.
The wider source report stated that 15 NYSC members had been rescued, although the detailed police account specifically described an initial rescue of 11 victims.
Security operations were continuing to locate remaining abductees and apprehend the attackers.
The police said operational and intelligence resources were being deployed to secure the area.
The incident again highlights the vulnerability of travelers on some inter state routes where kidnappers use forested areas to stage attacks and retreat before security forces arrive.
