Nigerian Afrobeats star Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P, has announced a change to his official birthday celebration date, distancing himself from the long-shared date with his twin brother Paul Okoye, also known as Rudeboy.
The singer disclosed the decision in a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account on April 20, stating that November 18 — the date both brothers were born — will no longer be recognised as his celebration day. He announced that his birthday will now be marked annually on November 30.
“Dear family, friends, and fans, I’m making it official. November 18th is no longer my birthday celebration date. Please note that I will not be accepting any messages or gifts on that day. My birthday will now be celebrated on November 30th. This is a personal decision, and I truly appreciate your understanding,” he wrote.
Both artistes, born on November 18, 1981, rose to fame as members of P-Square, one of Africa’s most successful pop duos. Their partnership dominated the music scene for years with a string of hit songs and international recognition.
However, the twins’ relationship has been marked by recurring disputes. The duo first split in 2017 following disagreements over management, finances, and creative direction. Although they reunited in 2021 to the excitement of fans, the reconciliation proved short-lived, with both artistes returning to solo careers.
The latest development comes amid renewed tensions between the brothers. Recently, Rudeboy alleged that Mr P was behind his invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), claiming that a petition accusing him of financial misconduct was filed against him.
According to the claims, Paul Okoye was invited for questioning by the anti-graft agency and asked to provide legal representation and sureties as part of the process. While there has been no official confirmation of the allegations, the situation has further strained relations between the siblings.
Peter Okoye’s decision to shift his birthday celebration date is being widely interpreted as a symbolic move reflecting the deepening divide between the once inseparable duo.
As both artistes continue to pursue individual careers, the latest episode underscores the enduring tensions that have overshadowed one of Nigeria’s most iconic musical partnerships.
