Peter Obi Meets Former African Leaders in South Africa

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has revealed details of a high-level meeting with former Botswana President Ian Khama and former South African President Thabo Mbeki during his recent visit to South Africa.

Obi disclosed that the meeting took place in Cape Town before his departure to Johannesburg, describing it as his final engagement in the city.

According to Obi, the visit provided an opportunity to appreciate both former leaders for their comments on recent immigration-related issues within the region and for their continued advocacy for peace, unity and cooperation among African nations.

He noted that Khama and Mbeki remain highly respected across Africa because of their contributions to governance and continental development during and after their time in office.

During his meeting with Mbeki, Obi also reunited with former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi, whom he described as a close friend.

Fayemi delivered the keynote address at the Africa Day lecture hosted by the Thabo Mbeki Foundation, focusing on themes centred on rebuilding African unity and strengthening institutions across the continent.

The event formed part of activities commemorating Africa Day and brought together political leaders, policymakers and intellectuals to discuss pathways for deeper regional integration and sustainable development across Africa.
