Former DSS Boss Kayode Are Begins Diplomatic Duties as Nigeria’s Ambassador to United States

Former Director General of the Department of State Services, Kayode Are, has officially commenced his diplomatic assignment as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States.

His assumption of office marks a significant transition from a distinguished career in intelligence and national security to international diplomacy, as Nigeria seeks to strengthen bilateral relations with the United States across security, trade, investment and strategic cooperation.

Are, who previously led the Department of State Services during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most experienced security figures. During his tenure at the DSS, he was credited with advancing intelligence operations and internal security coordination at a critical period in the country’s democratic development.

Diplomatic sources said the former intelligence chief has already begun engagements aimed at deepening diplomatic ties between Abuja and Washington, with emphasis on regional security, economic collaboration and Nigeria’s foreign policy interests.

His appointment is expected to leverage his extensive experience in security and governance to strengthen cooperation between both countries, particularly in counterterrorism, intelligence sharing and transnational crime prevention.

Nigeria and the United States maintain longstanding diplomatic and economic relations, with both countries collaborating on issues ranging from security and democratic governance to education, health and energy development.

Analysts say Are’s background in intelligence and strategic affairs could play a pivotal role in enhancing diplomatic engagement at a time of evolving global security and geopolitical challenges
