Lionel Messi’s landmark performance was overshadowed by a stunning collapse as Inter Miami CF surrendered a three-goal lead to lose 4-3 against Orlando City SC in a thrilling Major League Soccer encounter on Saturday.
The defeat leaves Miami still searching for their first win at the newly opened Nu Stadium, despite appearing firmly in control for much of the game.
Playing his 100th match for the club, Messi dazzled early on and extended Miami’s lead in the 33rd minute with a trademark left-footed strike from outside the box, curling the ball past Orlando goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau to make it 3-0.
The hosts had taken an early advantage through Ian Fray, who opened scoring in the fourth minute, before Venezuelan midfielder Telasco Segovia doubled the lead in the 25th minute.
However, the momentum shifted dramatically before halftime when Argentine forward Martin Ojeda pulled one back for Orlando in the 39th minute with a long-range effort.
Ojeda continued his impressive form in the second half, scoring again in the 68th minute with another strike from the edge of the area before completing his hat-trick from the penalty spot in the 79th minute to level the match.
With Miami struggling to regain control, Tyrese Spicer sealed the comeback for Orlando deep into stoppage time, finishing clinically after breaking through the defence.
The dramatic turnaround marks Miami’s second defeat of the MLS season and raises fresh concerns for the side, coached by Argentine Guillermo Hoyos, as they continue to adjust to life at their new home ground.
