The Nigerian Postgraduate College of Optometrists has called for greater emphasis on research, innovation and specialist education to improve eye care and reduce avoidable blindness in Nigeria.

The call was made at the college’s 18th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference in Nasarawa State and Abuja, where 17 new fellows were inducted across seven specialist faculties.

College President Franklin Koi said fellowship required commitment to clinical excellence, ethical leadership, research and mentorship. He announced plans to strengthen residency programmes, expand research and increase the contribution of fellows to university optometric education.

Bingham University Deputy Vice Chancellor Musa Dankyau urged professionals to collaborate across disciplines and focus research on practical health problems. He recommended digital referral systems, tele eye care, artificial intelligence and integrated diabetic eye clinics.

Other speakers advocated structured mentorship, centres of excellence and stronger use of implementation science to translate research findings into everyday clinical practice.
