Digital payments company OPay has detailed the technology infrastructure behind its platform, saying years of investment in engineering and security have enabled it to process millions of daily transactions with a 99.9 percent success rate while positioning the company for global expansion.
Speaking at a media event in Lagos, Chief Commercial Officer Elizabeth Wang said the company aims to serve one billion users, support 10 million merchants and create one million jobs by making digital financial services more accessible, describing the reliability behind everyday transactions as the product of sustained investment in infrastructure. Chief Operating and Technology Officer Dotun Adekunle said the company’s engineering approach begins with customer pain points such as failed transfers and delayed notifications, addressing them through redundant payment infrastructure including direct connections to payment switching partners and automatic failover systems that reroute transactions during disruptions.
Adekunle said the company redesigned its processing systems to cut average transaction time to under one second, and detailed its security architecture, which activates additional verification only when suspicious activity is detected, supported by features including an emergency lock, safety pin and an AI powered anti scam tool. Wang said the company remains committed to expanding financial inclusion through initiatives including a 1.2 billion naira scholarship programme spanning ten years.
