Nigeria’s Communications Minister, Bosun Tijani, Appointed Chair of ITU Council

Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has been appointed Chair of the 2026 Council of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), marking a significant leadership role for Nigeria in global digital governance.

The announcement was made during the inaugural plenary session of the Council held on April 28 in Geneva, Switzerland.

In a statement released by the minister’s Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Isime Esene, the ITU Council was described as the Union’s governing body between Plenipotentiary Conferences. It is responsible for policy direction, financial oversight, and ensuring the effective implementation of programmes that promote global connectivity, digital inclusion, and emerging technology governance.

The statement noted that this year’s Council is convening at a critical time, as rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, next-generation networks, and resilient digital infrastructure continue to reshape the global digital landscape.

As Chair, Tijani is expected to lead discussions among member states on strategic priorities, including strengthening the ITU’s support for countries adopting emerging technologies, expanding stakeholder participation, improving sustainable funding models, and advancing institutional reforms to enhance the Union’s responsiveness and efficiency.

The Council will also contribute to preparations ahead of the upcoming Plenipotentiary Conference scheduled for later in the year.

Reacting to his appointment, Tijani said: “It is a profound honour to be entrusted by member states to serve as the Chair of the 2026 Council of the International Telecommunication Union.”
