The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria has summoned the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa over recent protests and reported attacks targeting foreign nationals, including Nigerians.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the ministry said the envoy had been invited to a meeting scheduled for Monday, May 4, 2026, at its headquarters. The engagement is aimed at formally expressing the Nigerian government’s concern over developments that could strain diplomatic relations between both countries.
According to the ministry, discussions will focus on ongoing demonstrations in South Africa and documented cases involving the alleged mistreatment of Nigerian citizens and attacks on their businesses.
The government acknowledged growing public concern in Nigeria over the situation but urged citizens to remain calm, assuring that efforts are underway to safeguard the rights and welfare of Nigerians living in South Africa.
“The Federal Government remains committed to protecting the interests and well-being of its citizens abroad,” the statement said.
The move comes amid renewed tensions following reports of xenophobic incidents in parts of South Africa, a recurring issue that has previously tested relations between Africa’s two largest economies.
The statement was signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
