Plateau State Commissioner of Police Faniyan Ayodeji has pledged stronger action against mob violence, corruption and other criminal activity as he begins his tenure.
Ayodeji said the command would pursue policing based on human rights, professionalism, community partnership and better use of technology.
He warned officers against brutality and other misconduct and said restoring public trust would be a major priority.
The commissioner also issued a warning against jungle justice.
He said mob attacks were criminal acts and could amount to culpable homicide when they resulted in death.
Residents were urged to hand suspects to law enforcement agencies rather than take the law into their own hands.
Ahead of political campaigns, Ayodeji said the command would hold consultations with stakeholders and deploy security personnel around identified flashpoints.
He assured political parties that the police would remain neutral.
The commissioner also disclosed that intelligence operations had recently prevented an attempted kidnapping and that suspects were in custody.
According to figures released by the command, dozens of suspects had been arrested and firearms and ammunition recovered in recent operations.
Ayodeji said motorcycle and vehicle regulations would also be enforced during the political period.
He promised that enforcement would be transparent and not used to harass residents.
The commissioner called on communities to support the police with credible intelligence, arguing that security would improve through stronger cooperation between residents and law enforcement agencies.
