Liverpool have parted ways with manager Arne Slot following a disappointing Premier League campaign that saw the club finish fifth, 25 points behind champions Arsenal.
The club announced Slot’s departure on Saturday, stating that a “change of direction” was necessary despite the Dutchman guiding Liverpool to a league title during his first season in charge.
Slot, who succeeded Jürgen Klopp in 2025, had been widely praised after leading Liverpool to a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title in his debut campaign. However, expectations were not met this season, with the Reds struggling to mount a credible title defence despite significant investment in new players.
Liverpool reportedly spent nearly £450 million ($605 million) on transfers in a single window last year, a record outlay for a Premier League club. Yet the spending failed to translate into consistent performances, with the team falling well behind the league leaders and facing growing criticism from supporters.
Club Seeks New Direction
In a statement confirming the decision, Liverpool said the move was made after careful consideration.
“We have collectively come to the conclusion that change is necessary in order for the club to keep moving forward,” the club said. “The team’s trajectory is best addressed through a change of direction.”
The club stressed that the decision was not a reflection of Slot’s abilities, acknowledging his achievements and thanking him for delivering a Premier League title.
“Arne leaves with our gratitude, with a Premier League title to his name, and with the knowledge that he and his family will always be welcomed back at Anfield,” the statement added.
Liverpool also confirmed that the process of appointing a successor is already underway.
Dressing Room Tensions
The season was marked by reports of dressing-room unrest, highlighted by comments from star forward Mohamed Salah, who publicly called for a return to the “heavy metal football” associated with Klopp’s tenure.
Salah’s remarks reportedly received support from several members of the squad, fuelling speculation about dissatisfaction with the team’s style of play under Slot.
Iraola Emerges as Favourite
Outgoing AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Slot after guiding Bournemouth to European qualification for the first time in the club’s history.
Iraola’s strong relationship with Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes, who previously worked at Bournemouth, is believed to strengthen his candidacy.
Many Liverpool supporters had also hoped for a return of former midfielder Xabi Alonso, but the Spaniard is set to take charge of Chelsea next season.
Challenging Circumstances
Slot’s second season was also affected by off-field difficulties, including the tragic death of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota in a car accident last July.
Despite securing qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League, Liverpool’s hierarchy ultimately opted for a managerial change as the club seeks to return to domestic and European contention.
The decision brings an end to Slot’s brief but eventful tenure at Anfield, leaving Liverpool searching for a new leader ahead of a crucial rebuilding phase.
