Lamido Laments as PDP Stalwarts Scatter to Rival Parties Ahead of 2027

Former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido has publicly lamented the fragmentation of the Peoples Democratic Party’s political family, expressing deep concern over what he described as a murky political environment in which many of the party’s most prominent alumni had scattered across rival platforms ahead of the 2027 general election.

In a reflective Facebook post, Lamido said he was struggling to understand the political direction of the moment in Nigeria well enough to make what he described as a less confused personal decision about his own path. He said many leading figures now occupying significant positions in the APC, the African Democratic Congress, and the Nigeria Democratic Congress were products of the PDP, arguing that whatever titles, authority, or visibility they currently commanded had been conferred on them by the party they had since abandoned.

He listed senior PDP alumni now in the APC including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, and several former governors, while pointing to Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and Aminu Tambuwal among those now aligning with the ADC, and Seriake Dickson and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as influential figures in the NDC alongside Peter Obi.

Lamido recalled the historic role the PDP played in rebuilding Nigeria after the June 12 crisis of 1993, saying the party had restored national trust and repositioned Nigeria as a credible actor within ECOWAS and the African Union, before questioning whether Nigeria knew where it was 27 years after those foundational efforts. He suggested that coalition-building had become necessary for opposition forces to avoid the fragmentation that had repeatedly weakened their capacity to mount a credible challenge to the ruling party.
