State plans campaigns in English, Yoruba and Pidgin, focusing on phishing, passwords, authentication and device security.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called on residents and businesses to strengthen their digital safety practices as the state participates in Cybersecurity Awareness Month.
In a statement issued through Commissioner for Information and Strategy Gbenga Omotoso, the governor said online safety required action by individuals as well as public institutions. He stressed that awareness of common scams and routine security precautions could reduce exposure to fraud and other cyber threats.
The state government said its Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology would work with the Cybersecurity Advisory Board, led by Professor Fene Osakwe, to deliver awareness messages throughout October. Materials are to be shared through traditional and digital channels in English, Yoruba and Pidgin to reach a wider audience.
The planned guidance covers identifying phishing attempts, choosing stronger passwords, enabling multifactor authentication and keeping devices and software updated. These measures are intended to help residents recognize suspicious activity before it results in financial or data loss.
According to the administration, it has also introduced cybersecurity guidelines for businesses of different sizes, expanded professional training and pursued improvements to the protection of public digital systems. Lagos said it was working towards ISO 27001 certification as part of a broader effort to strengthen information security management.
The government presented the campaign as part of its drive to build confidence in online services and digital commerce. The practical test will be whether residents and organizations adopt the recommended safeguards and whether public agencies maintain effective systems for responding to incidents.
